TMI arrests - Horses’ Mouths – 1 April 2015

Pakatan Rakyat

We will hear the state’s explanation and raise this in the political bureau meeting. Our stand at national level is to defend and strengthen Pakatan Rakyat. (Pakatan Sabah and Sarawak) has not broken up. There are differences in opinions and this is a state-level view, but the final decision will be made at central level.

Azmin Ali, PKR deputy president, on its Sabah division’s decision to cut ties with PAS counterparts

TMI arrests

I think they were rightly arrested to be brought in for questioning because journalists are not above the law. I believe in the freedom of the press, but it does not give them a licence to lie.

Nazri Aziz, Tourism and Culture Minister, defending the arrest of the four The Malaysian Insider (TMI) editors and a publisher of The Edge Group

Remember, the random use of the Sedition Act to control the rakyat will spur anger and an uprising.

Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, PAS vice president

These arrests appear to go beyond just our reportage about one hudud article.

Jahabar Sadiq, The Malaysian Insider CEO, on the police’s action to detain him and four others, including three senior editors and The Edgepublisher Ho Kay Tat, over an article which claimed that the Conference of Rulers had rejected the hudud bill

Malaysiakini condemns in the strongest possible terms the arrest of editors and the publisher of The Malaysian Insider over a purportedly erroneous news report. After all, an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. This is the time for journalists to join hands and send a clear message to those in power that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

Malaysiakini, news portal

Very sad day for media freedom, as limited as we already had. How come IGP gets to decide who is seditious and who is not? If the report is inaccurate, then there should be official statement on it. TMI would lose some credibility.

Marina Mahathir, daughter of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, questioning national police chief Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s judgment in using the Sedition Act to arrest and detain four journalists from TMI

Hudud

Clearly Nazri, as a member of cabinet, is confused or was not informed on the steps taken by PAS and the Kelantan government to ensure the legality of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code II (Amendment 2015) 1993 [...] This has been agreed upon by the National Hudud Technical Committee involving members of the federal and Kelantan governments and by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom. As a minister and senior politician, Nazri should have obtained information from Jamil Khir first so he doesn’t look out of touch.

Mahfuz Omar, PAS information chief, blasting Umno minister Nazri Aziz for saying it is stupid to discuss the implementation of the hudud due to the law’s unconstitutionality
