Perak PAS youth chief Raja Ahmad Iskandar said former Menteri Besar Tan Sri Mohammad Tajol Rosli Ghazali's idea for an alternative airport for the state to replace the current airport is still relevant.
Raja Ahmad pointed to the high cost to upgrade the current airport to almost RM300 million and at the same time it inhibit the construction of taller building in the city.
In a statement, Raja Ahmad noted that the proposal had been put forth to the federal government in 2007 with some 1,200 hectares of land being allocated in Sri Iskandar.
Raja Ahmad pointed to the current massive development in Sri Iskandar with several higher tertiary institutions being located in the area.
Raja Ahmad said the area would also develop further if the plan to have a rail link between Ipoh and Lumut materialise.
"The plan is in order with the development in Ipoh, Sri Iskandar and also in Lumut,"he said. He said with the development in Lumut to make it a port would further boost the transportation sector in the state.
Raja Ahmad said priority must also be given to have an airport of international standard before that of a low cost.
Therefore he called for current Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir to be committed to the earlier plan for a new airport as a long term plan to boost the transportation and tourism sector and further boost to local development.
