DAP’s Tiger of Jelutong, and Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh passed away after a accident in North South Highway near Kampar, Perak at 130am today. He was 73.
His assistant was also killed in the crash.
It was understood that the driver and his son Ram Karpal are seriously injured.
On March 29, Karpal had stepped down as DAP chairman following his conviction under the Sedition Act where he was found guilty for questioning the Perak ruler, Sultan Azlan Shah on his decision to remove former Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin from his post, in February 2009.
In the May 2013 election, Karpal retained his Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat with a staggering majority of 41,778 votes.
He polled 55,839 votes against his opponent Teh Beng Yeam of MCA who obtained 14,061 votes.
In a swift reaction on Facebook, PAS vice president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat had expressed their condolences to the family.
In Twitter, Prime Minister Najib Razak and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim had expressed their deepest sympathy.
“We have lost a friend: a fighter for justice Karpal Singh. We spoke at length on the telephone at 6.30pm yesterday. My condolences to the family,” Anwar twitted.
"I have just landed at Ankara when I heard the news that YB Karpal Singh died in a road accident. My condolences to the family," read Najib’s tweet.
DAP Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching was in shock over the news.
